    They moved to the west in serach for fertile lands.

    Explanation:

    With the land in the southern states intoxicated with the over growing of cotton, what the slave owners and farm owners decided to do, since the production of cotton was the main economic ativity and the one that produced the most money they actually decided to go west and they brought slavery with them to those states to produce cotton.
