The economic base of the Dutch colony in the New Amsterdam was Trade.

A successful Dutch settlement named New Amsterdam grew up on the Southern tip of the Manhattan Island. Like the English settlers, Dutch, however, did not show much interest in Agriculture, and they were interested primarily in the Fur trade. They were also involved in the trade of Tobacco and supplied their Indian trade partners with Guns and Ammunition. Alcohol was another important trade item for the West India Company. To make this trade more convenient they introduced Wampum as a kind of currency.
