Being governed and taxed without representation.

The settlers of the British colonies were English as well as Dutch, German, Irish, and other ethnicities. Being controlled by the British was not appealing to non-English peoples. Additionally, there was no direct representation for the colonists in Parliament and many argued not having direct representation was a violation of the English government and Constitution.
