Dalai Lama XIV, (born July 6, 1935, Tibet), title of the Tibetan Buddhist monk Bstan-'dzin-rgya-mtsho (Tenzin Gyatso), the 14th Dalai Lama but the first to become a global figure, largely for his advocacy of Buddhism and of the rights of the people of Tibet.
