Why can it be argued that the Warsaw Pact was less of a defensive alliance and more of a means to control the Soviet satellite states?

    The Warsaw Pact was a military alliance between the communist states of Eastern Europe promising to defend one another if attacked. Even though it was agreed to not interfere in one another's internal affairs, the Soviet Union continued to exert their control over their allies (the satellite states).
