Jeffersonian republicans were known for their support of a small central (aka federal) government. This group feared a strong central government like the one the colonists experienced as part of the British empire. When in office, Jefferson ensured the scope of the federal government was limited by ending internal taxes, shrinking the size of the army and navy, and paying off the government's debt. This small federal government allowed states to have more autonomy.
