Massachusetts Bay Colony (Its name) was started in 1630 by a group of about 1,000 Puritan refugees from England under Gov. John Winthrop and Deputy Gov. Thomas Dudley. The Puritans were persecuted in England and so they came here. They were not the first group to land on Massachusetts so they took careful note of the Pilgrims mistakes and came better prepared, bringing several tools and medicine during the harsh winters. Because the Puritans were better prepared, the towns grew up quickly. The Puritans had an extremely harsh way of life and were strict, forcing their children and themselves to work a lot, therefore towns sprung up quickly. The Puritans landed in Boston and because of their supplies, did not lose so many people by sickness and were quick to make friends with the Native Americans (but later retracted them) The towns sprung up quickly and several schools and academies were created. The Puritan Colony is best described as hardworking, strict but successful. They took over the Pilgrims and merged them all into Massachusetts. They made sure not to repeat previous mistakes made by the Pilgrims. I would say the Puritans were lucky because they knew what they had to do because of the Pilgrims before them. But The Puritans did face a lot of criticism when they banned Quaker beliefs and imposed strict punishments when breaking the law. Roger Ascham was mad and broke away from the Puritans, creating Rhode Island, where he was kinder to the natives than the Puritans. But they because one of the first successful colonies in New England.
