The answer is A, General Lee's surrender in the Appomattox courthouse when his men were surrounded. The Battle of Appomattox Court House, which was fought on the morning of April 9, 1865, was one of the last battles of the American Civil War. It was the final engagement of Confederate Army G eneral Robert E. Lee' s Army of Northern Virginia before it surrendered to the Union Army commandeered by Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. After the ten month long siege of Petersburg in the Confederate capital of Richmond Virginia, Lee abandoned the capital in the hopes of joining Confederate forces in North Carolina. Union forces pursued the retreating army and cut them off at the Appomattox Court House. Upon being surrounded and realizing that he had no other choice, Lee surrendered. This marked the end of the Civil War.
