Why was the acquisition of islands in the pacific ocean vital to the us navy between 1857-1903

During this time period, one of the most important lands grabs was that of Hawaii. Hawaii provided an excellent naval base and gave the United States a hold in the Pacific. It made it easier to sail to other islands in the Pacific Ocean as well as to control a portion of the area.
