So th function represents the area, A, to e mulched is

The area to be mulched is the area of the big rectangle with the border minus the area of the original garden

A = (l + 2x) (w + 2x) - (lw)

A = (2w + 3a + 2x) (w + 2x) - (2w^2 + 3w)
