    1.33 s

    Step-by-step explanation:

    Given:

    Δy = - 5 ft

    v₀ = 17.5 ft/s

    a = - 32 ft/s²

    Find: t

    Δy = v₀ t + ½ at²

    -5 = 17.5 t + ½ (-32) t²

    0 = - 16t² + 17.5t + 5

    0 = 32t² - 35t - 10

    t = [ 35 ± √ ((-35) ² - 4 (32) (-10)) ] / 64

    t = (35 ± √2505) / 64

    t = 1.33

    Amy has 1.33 seconds to react before the volleyball hits the ground.
