A wooden toy kit has different painted solids. One solid is a cylinder with a diameter of 2cm and a height of 14cm.

Q. What is the surface area of the cylinder? (Answer is 96cm^2, I know how to get it)

Q. One can of paint covers 40m^2. How many cylinders can be painted with one coat of paint? (Answer is about 4244, but the question is how do you get it?)

    Surface area of a cylinder = 2π (diameter/2) h + 2π (diameter / 2) ²

    Replacing with the values given

    s = 2π (2/2) 14 + 2π (2/2) ²

    s = 87.96 + 6.28 = 94.24 cm2

    Since:

    1 m2 = 10,000 cm2

    40 m2 = 400,000 cm2 (area that one can of paint covers)

    We have to divide the area that one can of paint covers by the surface area of each cylinder:

    400,000/94.24 = 4244 cylinders
