I need a walkthrough on this, I have tonight to get it finished and I'm not sure where to begin ...

    We have been given that the weight of the steel beam is proportional to its length.

    Therefore, w ∞ l

    or, w = kl, where k is the constant of proportionality.

    So, to know the relationship between the weight and the length, we need to know the constant of proportionality.
