Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on May 5, the date that the Mexican Army won and broke away from the French Empire, Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The battle lasted for about 2 years, making it start in 1861. The reason why this began was because Mexico wanted to be independent. So the Mexican troops turned against the French Government. (At the time it was their own government.) Not that many casualties had accrued though, the French had nearly 500 people get hurt at Puebla, including more than 100 killed in action. Mexican losses were about 85 dead and more than 100 wounded.

They celebrate with dancing, and dressing up, and the one of the most known, food and drinks, like tacos, guacamole and tequila. Since that war declared there freedom this made it a pretty big Mexican holiday, like Day of the Dead.
