When you purchase an item with your debit card, the money is taken directly from your bank account. When you use a credit card, the money is taken from the bank itself, building up a debt you eventually pay the bank back. Debit cards have lower fees for use, but are more susceptible to hacking. Credit cards provide numerous protections but are more expensive.
