We know from the example that the x value is equal to the number of hours worked. We also know that, in the end, he was paid $84, so that should be our y value (also expressed in functions as "f (x) ". So our only missing value to assign is how much is paid for every hour worked, or the rate. Since there's no variable left to assign, we must add a variable for the rate (which is what we're trying to figure out). Let's say that variable is r. So the function should look like this: f (x) = rx. Since our example shows the landscaper was paid $84, and he worked 3 hours, the revised function would be 84 = 3r. Simply divide both sides by 3, and you get 28 = r. So the rate is $28 an hour. Now the second part of the question. He worked 100 hours total, for the rate of $28 an hour. So he was paid a total of $2,800. He saves 15% of that, so we would divide 2,800 by 100 to get 28, then multiply by 15 to get 420. So he saved $420 dollars.
