A 75 kg skateboarder is initially going 5 m/s to the right. He slows to a stop over 10 seconds. What is the direction and magnitude of the net force that causes this change?

    Explanation:

    Given that

    m = 75 kg

    initial velocity, u = 5 m/s (towards right)

    The final speed, v = 0 (takes 10 s)

    We know that

    v = u + a t

    a=acceleration

    t=time

    0 = 5 + a x 10

    a = - 0.5 m/s²

    We know that force F

    F = m a

    F = 75 x (-0.5) N

    F = - 37.5 N

    Negative sign indicates that force will act opposite to the direction of motion. We can say that force act towards left side.

    Magnitude of force, F = 37.5 N (Towards left)
