Asexual reproduction is common in prokaryotes and no variation occurs. Hence it is not widespread as sexual reproduction.

    Explanation:

Asexual reproduction is common in prokaryotes such as bacteria, protozoa, etc. Many plants also reproduce by asexual as well as sexual methods. The asexual reproduction is like the mitosis cell division, where one parent body divides into 2, and two individuals divide to form 4 and so on. Thus a single parent develops multiple copies of itself. In this type of reproduction, only one parent involves and, all the offspring are identical to each other. Hence they consider as clones. But there is no genetic variation due to single parent involvement. They can not survive in a new environment and vulnerable to adaptation. While in sexual reproduction natural selection happens and they adapt to the changing environment.
