How does the sacrament of penance remind us of god's infinite mercy?

Sacrament of penance is described as being the only ordinary method for forgiveness of any sins that may have been committed after baptism. It could be argued that this belief originates from God himself, who did not judge or treat anybody different no matter what sins they may or may not have committed.
