The Japanese saw Westerns as foreign devils. They were very hairy, filthy by Japanese standards, and socially uncouth in the strangest ways. However, the Japanese like muskets. After they'd bought enough to make them on their own, they no longer had any use for the foreign devils. The upper class also despised Christianiy and crucified evey Christian they could find.

The Chinese saw the foreign devils in the same way the Japanese, but they liked doing business with them, so the foreign devils were confined to a single island.
