Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a viral infection which causes skin or mucous membrane growths (warts). It occurs when the virus enters the body through a cut, abrasion or small tear on the skin, it is transferred primarily by skin-skin contact. Cervical cancer occurs when the cells of the cervix grow abnormally and invade other tissues or organs of the body. Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by HPV infections, however cervical cancer may take up to 20 years to develop after an HPV infection

Early-stage cervical cancers can be treated with a radical hysterectomy operation (removal of the cervix, uterus, part of the vagina and nearby lymph nodes) which can cure early stage cervical cancer and prevent recurrence. Removal of the uterus will make it impossible to get pregnant.
