Who was Martin Luther and why did he post the 95 Theses?

in 1517, Martin Luther published his 95 Theses in an attempt to get the Roman Catholic Church to stop selling indulgences, or 'get out of hell free' cards. Luther did not think the Church had the authority to grant such indulgences, especially not for money.
