Why do you think federal courts rule in disputes between states? what would be an example of such a case?

Federal courts rule in disputes between states because without a higher court the states would be potentially be unable to adjudicate the case. An example of a case could be a dispute over territory along a border or a state, or the right to tax ships traveling through the states waterways that could not be clearly defined, or issues over cross border pollution.
