What is a deep valley with very steep sides

A canyon or ravine is the name given for a deep valley with steep sides. Canyons or ravines can be found in many natural environments. Many canyons have been shaped by waterways cutting through rock to leave step cliffs. An example of a large canyon is the Grand Canyon which was shaped over time by many forces of nature including the erosion caused by the Colorado River.
