The Franco-Dahomean War was held from February 21 to October 4, 1890 in the present department of Oueme, Benin. The French troops, aided by fighters from the Kingdoms of Porto Novo and Kinto, prevailed over the forces of the Dahomey kingdom. Dahomey had to recognize the French protectorate over Porto-Novo and Kinto and surrender the city of Cotonou.
