During Reconstruction, African American leaders participated actively in the political life of the country. About 2,000 African Americans held public office, from the local level to the Senate.

These leaders often shared similar political views, and there were very few signs of disagreement. A lot of them believed that openly displaying signs of conflict would provide evidence to white leaders that Black Americans were not ready to hold public office.
