Dalton theory is based on atomic theory and now is known as formula weight whereas Gay-Lussac measured the volume of the gases.

Now, Dalton verified the law of multiple proportions theory but he was not able to state the change in volume from 4 to 2 in case of nitrogen and hydrogen (at constant temperature and pressure) whereas Gay-Lussac verified the results and prepared gases theory by combining volumes of gases.
