    Plugging - 1 in for 1, we get (-1) ^3+6 (-1) ^2+12 * (-1) + 8. For (-1) ^3, since 3 is odd and - 1 is negative, we end up with - 1. For (-1) ^2, since 2 is even, we end up with 1. For - 1, we have - 1, so we have (-1) + 6*1+12 * (-1) + 8=-1+6-12+8=15-12=3
