List the amendments in the bill of rights and describe the basic rights they protect.

The bill of rights were the 10 ten amendments to the Constitution.

1. The First Amendment: Protects the freedom of speech, religion, and of the press. This amendment also protects the right to petition the United States government and of peaceful assembly.

2. The Second Amendment: Rights to bear and keep arms by the armed militia of a state.

3. The Third Amendment: The amendment forbids prohibits the dismemberment of troops in any house when there is peace and only allows it to be done lawfully when there is war.

4. The Fourth Amendment: Protects the right to unlawfully search or seize, as it ensures that a warrant must be issued.

5. The Fifth Amendment: This ensures that before a prison is charged with a serious crime, he or she must be indicted by a grand jury. Further prohibits double jeopardy, self-incrimination, and the due process clause.

6. The Sixth Amendment: Provides a right for criminals to have defendants and a right for public trial, and to be done by local and impartial jury, to inform the criminals of the charges against them, and have a lawyer.

7. The Seventh Amendment: This amendment set aside the right to a trial by a jury in civil cases.

8. The Eighth Amendment: This amendment forbids excessive fines, bails, and any unusual punishments.

9. The Ninth Amendment: Ensures that the enumeration of some rights to deny other rights retained is forbidden.

10. The Tenth Amendment: This amendment ensure that all powers that have not be given to federal government, or those that are not restricted from states by the Constitution, are given to the people or to the states.
